Uremia is a symptom of chronic or acute renal failure, the blood is not cleared as efficiently as it should then, what causes toxic substances accumulation. That makes the work of such organs as brain, heart or liver difficult.

   Uremia may also be caused by other factors e.g. heavy blood or extracellular fluid loss, blockage of urinary reflux or cancer. The disease leads to death.

   One method, thank to which people with uremia can be saved from death, is dialysis. The procedure lasts from 3 to 6 hours, it needs to be repeated three times a week and it saves life for up to 10 years. The second and the most effective method includes kidney transplantation but all patients have to wait long to find the histocompatible organ donor with the same blood group. It is also possible that after several years the organism rejects the transplanted kidney and dialysis is essential once again.

The final and the most effective uremia treatment is dialysis. One should be prompt enough to start the procedure of dialysis as soon as any of the symptoms of uremia are seen. If the person does not bear much symptoms or is asymptotic, then upon the falling of creatinine clearance to10 mL/min or lesser (creatinine level of 8-10 mg/dL), dialysis is commenced. A diabetic patient is subjected to dialysis when his/her creatinine level is of 16 mg/dL and a creatinine clearance of 15 mL/min.

Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is preferred for those who are having some primary cardiovascular ailment and need flexibility in their dialysis program. It can be easily performed at home or at a medical center depending upon the choice of the patient.
