What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a disease that affects many people, the attacks have various forms and various grades of strength. They are often preceded by headaches, nausea, irritability and feelings of upset or anxiety. During the attack, a person loses consciousness, falls down and has convulsions of hands and feet. Large attacks may also cause unconditional urination. After the attack, a person falls asleep and forgets about the whole event. Temporal attacks result in strange behavior, people laugh, smack and do things they don't normally do.
Epilepsy attacks are caused by pathological discharges of neurons in the brain, it may be caused by mechanical damage of the head e.g. during labor, infections or other destructive processes od the brain such as metabolism problems or poisonings. More often though, the causes of the disease remain unknown, it is genetically induced disease.
It may cause various side effects and complications eg. biting one's tongue; an epilepsy patient is dangerous not only to himself but also to other people. That is why they should not have a driving license. Epilepsy attacks may be life-threatening if they happen with short intervals one after another. The disease may disappear or appear during adolescence. Children with epilepsy should not be treated differently than healthy children, but they should be under constant doctor's control. You can reduce the number of attacks by following a sensible non-alcoholic diet. The treatment involves taking medication chosen specifically for an individual. Although it's really hard to choose a perfect drug it can help reduce the disease to the minimum. That is why it is possible to lead an ordinary life with epilepsy.
